Chancellor's Honors : Call for Nominations

LGBT Advocate Award
Deadline: February 12, 2010

The University of Tennessee’s Commission for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) People requests nominations for the LGBT Advocate Award to be presented at the Chancellor’s Honors Banquet. The LGBT Advocate Award recognizes leadership, integrity, and outstanding contributions in the promotion of an inclusive, safe, and respectful climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people at the University of Tennessee. The recipient demonstrates a commitment to the advancement of LGBT issues on campus and has created a tangible impact through dedication and support of the university’s LGBT population. All UT Knoxville employees including administrators, faculty, exempt staff, and non-exempt staff are eligible for the award. To nominate a faculty or staff member for the award, please submit a letter of nomination addressing the award criteria and describing the nominee’s specific contributions along with a current vita or bio of the nominee to drsmith@utk.edu. Nominations may also be faxed to 974-8245.
 
 
LGBT Student Leadership Award
Deadline: February 12, 2010

The University of Tennessee’s Commission for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) People requests nominations for the LGBT Student Leadership Award to be presented at the 2008 Chancellor’s Honors Banquet. The LGBT Student Leadership Award recognizes student leadership and outstanding contributions in educational, social, and/or political activism for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people at the University of Tennessee. The recipient demonstrates a commitment to the advancement of LGBT issues on campus and has created a tangible impact through advocacy for the university’s LGBT population. All graduate and undergraduate students at UT Knoxville are eligible for the award. To nominate a student for the award, please submit a letter of nomination addressing the award criteria and describing the nominee’s contributions along with a current bio of the nominee to drsmith@utk.edu. Nominations may also be faxed to 974-8245.

Our Mission:

The UT Commission for LGBT People is a body appointed by the Chancellor to advise on planning, implementation, and evaluation of University programs, policies, and services designed to improve the status of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people on the Knoxville Campus. The Commission, in its role as an advocacy group, is committed to the protection and advancement of LGBT students, faculty and staff at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

About the Commission

The Commission for LGBT People at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville was established by Chancellor Crabtree in November 2006. The Commission held its first meeting on December 12, 2006. [Commission Bylaws]

Commission members are appointed by the chancellor. The Commission for LGBT People at UT Knoxville is comprised of LGBT faculty, staff, students, as well as LGBT allies*. For information about serving on the Commission, please contact Membership Chair, Melissa Bartsch, mbartsch[at]utk.edu.

The Commission shall:


A. Recommend changes in policy or procedure relative to the concerns of LGBT people;

B. Make recommendations concerning new and existing academic, professional development, and extracurricular programs;

C. Recommend and encourage research to assess the status of LGBT people at The University of Tennessee (UT) and compare their status with that of LGBT people at other institutions and agencies;

D. Advise and consult with all University officials on the needs and status of LGBT people; and

E. Provide information to the campus and community on Commission and University programs and activities related to LGBT people.



*An Ally is a non-lesbian, gay man, bisexual, or transgender person who works towards combating homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism, both on a personal and institutional level.
